San Antonio Spurs center Victor Oubambiania became the sixth rookie in NBA history to reach the milestone of 250-plus blocked shots in a season since the 1973-74 campaign.
During the 2023-24 season, Oubambiania recorded 252 blocked shots. Previously, the feat of at least 250 blocked shots in a season had only been achieved by Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O'Neal, David Robinson, Manute Bol and Mark Eaton.
In the current NBA regular season, the 19-year-old basketball player is averaging 21,3 points, 10,6 rebounds and 3,8 assists per game. This is the Frenchman's first season in the NBA, after playing in the French league for Metropolitan 92.
The Spurs currently sit in 15th and final place in the Western Conference with a 20-60 record.
Oubambiania's shot-blocking prowess was a defining aspect of his rookie campaign, as he quickly established himself as one of the NBA's best rim protectors. His ability to alter and deny opposing shots has been instrumental in the Spurs' efforts to remain competitive, even as the team goes through a difficult rebuild.
“Victor’s defensive presence has been absolutely invaluable to us this season,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said. “He has a unique blend of size, timing and instincts that allows him to make a significant impact on that end of the floor. The way he can change the dynamic of a game with his interior defense is truly impressive.”
The young center's remarkable shot-blocking stats have been compared to some of the league's all-time best interior defenders, a testament to his burgeoning defensive prowess. Oubambiania's ability to protect the rim and deter opposing players from driving to the basket has been a key factor in his early success in the NBA.
“When you look at the list of players who have reached that 250-block mark in a season, it’s clear that Victor is in elite company,” Spurs veteran forward Keldon Johnson said. “He not only hits shots, but he completely changes the way teams try to attack the paint. That kind of defensive impact is so valuable, and it’s a big reason why we remain competitive even on our toughest nights.”
As Oubambiania continues to develop and refine his skills, the Spurs are confident that he will only continue to grow and become one of the most dominant defensive forces in the league. His combination of size, athleticism and instincts has the potential to transform the team's defensive identity and pave the way for future success.
“Victor’s defensive abilities are just the tip of the iceberg,” Popovich said. “He has the potential to be an elite two-way player, and we are committed to helping him reach that level. With his work ethic and our guidance, I have no doubt he will continue to make history and cement his place as one of the best big men in the League.”
