Former NBA player Rudy Gay, who spent four seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, was asked if Gregg Popovich was the right coach for center Victor Oubambiania.
"I don't know what kind of Pop you'd see right now. He's a little older now. I don't know how their relationship on the court is developing. The one thing I know is that Popovich is obviously incredibly knowledgeable," Gay said.
Popovich, who has been the Spurs' head coach since 1996, is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most respected coaches in NBA history. His ability to develop and get the most out of his players, regardless of their experience or skill level, has been a hallmark of his coaching tenure.
“Pop has a way of getting the best out of his players, especially young guys who are still learning the game,” Gay continued. “He’s incredibly patient, but he also demands a lot of accountability and discipline. That combination can be really powerful for a talented prospect like Oubambiania.”
The Spurs have a rich history of developing big men, with players like David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard all thriving under Popovich's tutelage. That track record has led many to believe that Oubambiania, with his unique blend of size, skill and defensive prowess, could thrive under Popovich's guidance.
“The way Pop approaches the game, both offensively and defensively, could be a great fit for Victor’s skill set,” Gay said. “He’s not afraid to give young players a lot of responsibility and freedom within the system, as long as they’re willing to put in the work and put in the work.”
Despite the Spurs' struggles this season, Popovich's reputation as a player development savant remains intact. His ability to turn raw talent into NBA-caliber contributors has been a key factor in the team's sustained success over the past two and a half decades.
“Pop’s ability to connect with players and get the most out of them is truly unmatched in this league,” Gay noted. “He’s not just a tactician, but a true mentor who can help guide young guys through the ups and downs of their early NBA careers.”
As Oubambiania continues to navigate his rookie season, the guidance and wisdom of a veteran coach like Popovich could prove invaluable. The young center’s defensive prowess and potential for growth align perfectly with the Spurs’ longstanding emphasis on fundamentals, teamwork and defensive intensity.
“If there’s one coach who can help Victor reach his full potential, it’s Gregg Popovich,” Gay said. “The way he develops players, the way he teaches the game and the way he builds a winning culture — that’s exactly what Victor needs right now as he takes his first steps in the NBA.”
